Product Description

Biological Indicator Overview

The Steam Biological indicator is specially designed for monitoring steam sterilization processes. If the sterilization process is unsuccessful, after incubation at 60±2°C, the color of the medium will change from purple to yellow or its shades, indicating the presence of viable Geobacillus stearothermophilus (ATCC 7953) spores.

If the sterilization process is successful, there will be no change in the color of the medium after incubation; it will remain in its original purple color. The last readout should be taken after 24-48 hours of incubation at 60±2°C.

  • Do not use for ETO, dry heat, formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide or other sterilization processes.
  • Single-use only; do not reuse the biological indicators.
  • Compliance with ISO 11138-1:2017 and ISO 11138-3:2017.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I interpret the results of the steam biological indicator?
After incubation, if the medium turns from purple to yellow, it indicates a sterilization failure. If the medium remains purple, the sterilization process was successful.
2. What is the required incubation temperature and time?
The indicators should be incubated at 60±2°C. The final readout is typically taken after 24 to 48 hours.
3. Can this indicator be used for Ethylene Oxide (EO) sterilization?
No, this specific model (BF-B16) is designed exclusively for steam/moist heat sterilization. It should not be used for ETO, dry heat, or formaldehyde processes.
4. What is the shelf life and storage recommendation?
The product has a quality guarantee period of two years. It should be stored in a cool, dry place away from light and sterilization agents.
5. What biological spore is used in these indicators?
It uses Geobacillus stearothermophilus (ATCC 7953) spores with a population ≥ 1.0 x 10⁵ cfu.
6. Does the product meet international standards?
Yes, the indicators are in full compliance with ISO 11138-1:2017 and ISO 11138-3:2017 standards for sterilization of health care products.
